Lab Week is a great time to generate new awareness and excitement about the laboratory medicine profession while having some fun with colleagues in the Laboratory.

What is lab week?

Medical Laboratory Professionals Week originated, at a National Level, in 1975 in an effort to raise public understanding and appreciation of the impact of the laboratory as it relates to a patient’s diagnosis and care. It is also critical for the public to understand the quality and professional accountability the lab has as it relates to the patient. Laboratorians play a vital role as a member of the healthcare team. This is also a moment for lab staff to recognize their contributions to patient care while having fun with their coworkers.

As President of the British Columbia Society of Laboratory Science (BCSLS), I am honoured to recognize and celebrate our professions during National Medical Laboratory Week. This is a time to pause and acknowledge the immense amount of work being done by laboratory professionals across our province—people who show up every day with skill, dedication, and heart. Across British Columbia, individuals have committed their careers to something greater than themselves. Whether you're leading teams, working at the bench, advancing laboratory informatics, overseeing quality, managing operations, or providing medical expertise —your contributions are the foundation of our healthcare system. Thank you for the work you do, often behind the scenes but always at the heart of patient care. The past few years have brought so many challenges. Laboratories across the province have faced staffing shortages, increased demands, and a rapid pace of change that has tested us all. And yet—we’ve persevered. We’ve adapted, innovated, and supported one another through it all. That resilience is what defines us. But resilience is more than endurance. It’s about growth, transformation, and purpose. In the face of adversity, we’ve not only held the line—we’ve pushed it forward. As we look to the future, we stand on the edge of exciting change. Advances in automation, technology, and AI are reshaping our professions. And while change can feel daunting, it also brings with it immense possibility—opportunities to redefine our roles, lead progress, and ensure that our voices shape the future of how we deliver care to our patients. So today, as we celebrate this week, I invite you to reflect on your impact—not just in the past, but in what’s to come. The work you do matters. Your dedication matters. And together, we will continue to shape a resilient, innovative, and compassionate future for laboratory science. Let’s keep supporting one another, embracing change, and taking pride in the difference we make—every single day. With heartfelt appreciation, Devena Steinmann - BCSLS President
