History
The British Columbia Society of Medical Technologists (BCSMT) was incorporated under the BC Society Act in 1969, formed by members of the provincial branch of the Canadian Society of Laboratory Technologists (CSLT). BCSMT changed its name to BCSLS in 1999 shortly after CSLT changed its name to CSMLS. The two organizations continue to have a close working relationship and have a formal affiliation agreement, but are separate legal entities.
In order to have representation and communication throughout the province there were originally 12 Academies created. The Society has been maintained entirely through the commitment of volunteers' energy at times, supplemented by a part time secretary. In 1994, the Board of Directors created positions for an Executive Director and Executive Assistant. It has in the past employed a part-time Education Coordinator.
Over the years the Society's Board of Directors had grown to 21 members with Academies sending representatives from each of the twelve areas. In 1996, the Board of Directors struck a task force to recommend a more efficient and effective governance structure. The Society adopted the task force recommendations in 1997, reducing the Board of Directors to its current status with nine members who are elected at large and meet at least quarterly to approve budgets, establish plans, set policies.
